Mrs. Vassie McKenzie, 100, of Sarasota, FL transitioned from earth to eternity on October 4, 2023. Homegoing Services will immediately follow after the visitation on October14, 2023 at 10AM at the C.L. Chandler Memorial Chapel, 1425 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Way, Sarasota, FL, 34234. Interment will follow at Manasota Memorial Park, 1221 53rd Avenue East, Bradenton, FL 34203.
Mrs. McKenzie was born in Guyton, Georgia to the late Willie and Oneida McKenzie. The family relocated to Sarasota, FL in 1926. Vassie has lived in Sarasota since that time and is where she attended school, worked, married and raised her children. She was an avid sports fan and loved watching the NFL, NBA, WNBA and professional tennis, as well as men’s and women’s college sports. She also, loved board games, especially Uno, Yahtzee, and Phase 10. She was also an active member of a local bowling league for many years. During the quiet and reflective hours, she loved to knit and crochet.
Vassie became a member of the Osprey Avenue Church of Christ at an early age and remained a faithful member until her health prevented her from attending.
She was preceded in death by son, Timothy Muff, daughter, Jacqueline Mathews, and siblings, Willie Jr, MacDonald, Arthur, Johnnie, Joseph, Albert and Moses McKenzie, Martha Ivery and Annye Belle Jones.
Vassie leaves to cherish her legacy, a son, Jeffrey McKenzie of Sarasota, daughters, Mary Thomas of Sarasota and Rita McKenzie of Citrus Springs, a sister, Alletha Welch, of St. Petersburg, 8 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, in-laws and friends.
